Earthquake damage

The quake caused damage to buildings in several cities in Morocco, especially in Marrakech and Agadir. In the medina of Marrakech, several buildings collapsed. We keep getting images of collapsed houses, cracked roads and panicking people. The official death toll stood at 820 at around 3:00 a.m. Dutch time. According to the National Institute of Geophysics (ING), the earthquake occurred at 11:11 p.m. local time, at a depth of 8 kilometers, in the municipality of Ighil in the province of Al Haouz. The ING issued an emergency warning in collaboration with the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST).

Earthquake Epicenter

The earthquake was felt in several regions of the country, including Kenitra, Rabat, Mohammedia, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, Essaouira, Tiznit and Guelmim.

A first aftershock was registered 20 minutes later about 30 km south of Casablanca, measuring 4.8. A second aftershock with a magnitude of 3.3 followed shortly after in the Marrakech region. Many people ran out of their homes in panic, fearing collapses or more aftershocks.

Earthquake area

Local press currently speaks of 2681 deaths, 1452 in Al Haouz, 764 in Taroudant, 202 in Chichaoua, 31 in Ouarzazate and 18 in Marrakech, 11 in Azillal, 5 in Agadir and three in Casablanca. And these have just been officially confirmed by the authorities.

Security forces have been deployed en masse to secure the affected areas and assist emergency services in the rescue operations. The emergency room at the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Marrakech is being overwhelmed by victims. According to a medical source, the situation is “serious”.

In Moulay Ibrahim, near Marrakech, people are buried under the rubble. Volunteers are still trying to rescue the victims, while authorities are being urged to provide urgent aid to the affected civilians. Other videos and photos on social media show cracked walls, crumbling ceilings and fallen objects in some homes and shops.

Earlier in the evening, international seismological observatories registered another strong earthquake in several parts of Morocco. It is not yet clear whether this quake is related to the later quake in Al Haouz.

Earthquake ZoneMorocco is located in a seismically active area and is regularly hit by earthquakes, especially in the north of the country. However, Friday's earthquake is the strongest ever recorded in the country and has caused panic among the population throughout the country.

The last major earthquake in Morocco was in 2004 in Al Hoceima. It measured 6.3 degrees on the Richter scale and killed 628 people. The most devastating earthquake was in 1960, when a 5.7 magnitude quake devastated the city of Agadir, killing more than 15,000 people.

Authorities have called on the population to remain calm and follow the instructions of the emergency services. The king has expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.
