Ukraine, ravaged by a terrible war, have ended up in a veritable hell on earth. Suddenly the country has a million refugees who seek refuge in neighboring countries such as Poland, Moldova, Slovakia and Romania. We receive daily images of : children who have to say goodbye to their father, who has to stay behind to fight for his country. Sobbing mothers unsure if they will ever see their grown sons again.
On social media, under the hashtag #africansinukraine, you will come across images of fleeing people from Ukraine who are refused entry on the train to, for example, Poland. Striking detail: these people are all of color, such as people from Morocco, Senegal or India who studied or worked in Ukraine. A black man who was filming emphasized that as black people, they were not allowed to take the train.
"In times of war you should not use the word racism because this is 'not the time'."
In such a crisis, everyone is trying to save their own skin. So apparently the following applies: own people first, something that is unacceptable. A CBS News reporter confirms the ranking of refugees by color and origin as follows: "With all due respect, this is not Iraq or Afghanistan, this is a civilized society that you would not expect."
In times of war you should not use the word racism because this is 'not the time'. Human lives are at stake and everything else disappears for a while. But in a civilized society we should be able to talk about racism and discrimination, even if that society is involved in a war. Because how on earth is it possible that people are opposed by their color or origin if they want to flee a war zone?
The most racist Ukraine coverage on TV News:
1. The BBC “It’s very emotional for me because I see European people with blue eyes and blonde hair being killed” - Ukraine’s Deputy Chief Prosecutor, David Sakvarelidze
2. CBS News "This isn't Iraq or Afghanistan...This is a relatively civilized, relatively European city" - CBS foreign correspondent Charlie D’Agata
3. Al-Jazeera What's compelling is looking at them, the way they are dressed. These are prosperous, middle-class people. These are not obviously refugees trying to get away from the Middle East...or North Africa. They look like any European family that you'd live next door to."
4. BFM TV (France) "We are in the 21st century, we are in a European city and we have cruise missile fire as though we were in Iraq or Afghanistan, can you imagine!?”
5. The Daily Telegraph This time, war is wrong because the people look like us and have Instagram and Netflix accounts. It's not in a poor, remote country any more. - Daniel Hannan
6. ITV (UK) "The unthinkable has happened...This is not a developing, third world nation; this is Europe!"
7. BFM TV (France) (again) "It's an important question. We’re not talking here about Syrians fleeing...We're talking about Europeans."
8. If you speak French, sample from the racism buffet on offer.
9. "To put it bluntly, these are not refugees from Syria, these are refugees from Ukraine...They're Christians, they're white. They're very similar [to us]" - explaining why Poland is accepting refugees.
"All refugees matter, regardless of color or origin. Especially in times of war we must not lose sight of our humanity."
Ukraine, in the eyes of the West, falls under the civilized part of the world. Refugees from there are more welcome than those from Afghanistan and Syria. I feel that mercy all over Europe. Of course we have seen the war in Syria happen, but 'this is different', I hear and notice. Not only because it is so close this time, but also because we recognize ourselves in these people.
But all refugees matter, regardless of color or origin. Especially in times of war we must not lose sight of our humanity. This whole situation is bad enough.
